Member for Murray Austin Evans has encouraged motorists to take care on the state’s roads during the October long weekend.

“I urge all motorists to follow the road rules this long weekend – slow down, take a rest and don’t touch your mobile phone,” Mr Evans said.

“Crash rates go up during holiday periods, which is why our community should expect to see more police out on the roads. It’s also why double demerits will be in place this long weekend.”

Minister for Police Troy Grant said this October long weekend marks the start of the school holidays, and many families will undoubtedly hit the road for a break with their kids.

“I want everyone to enjoy themselves and have a terrific time, but more importantly, I want them to arrive at their destination safe and sound,” said Mr Grant.

“One road fatality is one too many, so I urge people to stick to the speed limit, put their phone down, and observe the road rules.”

Operation SlowDown, the long weekend road safety enforcement campaign, starts at 12.01am on Friday 28 September 2018 and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 1 October 2018.

Double demerits will be in force throughout the period for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.

To stay safe:
• Plan your route and rest stops along the way
• Drive to traffic conditions, stick to speed limits and state laws
• Be aware of signs of fatigue
• Have a Plan B if you intend to drink alcohol
• Always wear a seat belt.
